5A - Identifying Local Opportunities

Tobacco banned at city parks

Summary: The article basically explained how Tobacco was bad for not only you but for the people breathing in the second-hand smoke. Then it proceeded to explain why tobacco was being banned in state parks in the area and the types of ways you could get in trouble with tobacco.

Problem: I think it is obvious that the problem is tobacco and the state is trying to get rid of it slowly by introducing laws because it has such a negative affect on the human body and the wildlife around it.

Who has the problem: Second hand smokers are really who have the problem addressed in this article because they come to a state park to enjoy nature and their experience is clouded by the smell of smoke and tar going into their lungs.

Shooting suspect appears in court

Summary: This short article was informing them about the case where a man shot another man from St. Paul in his own defense. He is being charged for third degree murder and they included a little bit from his lawyer about how he was acting in self defense because he has not had a violent past and was very cooperative with the police.

Problem: I believe the problem here is that people are not comfortable and do not feel safe so this man may have jumped to a conclusion that he was in danger when we don't really know the situation.

Who has the problem: Clearly the man who was shooting has a problem but this is also a problem for many Americans who are scared for their safety with all these mass shootings.

Philadelphia man caught with trafficked child

Summary: A man in Philadelphia was caught when suspected with kidnapping a 15 year old. It is believed that this child was a victim of a sex trafficking ring in Georgia.

Problem: Sex trafficking is not good and needs to be stopped.

Who has the problem: Any families with children or young girls.

Girl, 10, donates to anti-heroin group

Summary: This girl who is only 10 years old donated $75, which was all the money she made over summer, to an anti-heroin group.

Problem: Drugs are a big problem in the US especially a fatal drug such as heroin

Who has the problem: Families with loved ones addicted and the people that these heroin users affect or hurt.

Abortion ban angers doctors, mothers

Summary: A woman, Lacey, was 18 weeks pregnant with a son that would have a very short life once she gave birth due to his skull being too large and with this abortion ban becoming a thing, her and her husband had to decide quickly what they wanted to do and they chose to abort knowing their child would most likely die quickly right after birth.

Problem: Abortion bans are forcing people to have their children when they do not know the story on why people need to abort or not and it causes many unwanted babies and babies that would suffer from pain as they have birth defects.

Who has the problems: women who are raped, teens who get pregnant, and people who practice unsafe sex when they don't want children

  1. Hi Nathan,

I really appreciate the aesthetic of this blog post. Your use of the hyperlink in your post provides for a more cohesive reading of the post. Also, I liked that your post was mostly based on articles with bigger issues. I don't think that I would have thought to pick bigger topics for this assignment; my brain adhered to very small-scale, somewhat easily fixed issue. I think it's important to point out that these bigger issues can also be an opportunity to provide solutions and meet and unmet needs.
