12A- Figuring Out Buyer Behavior

1) A segment I would really like to target is the fisherman, oudoorsy-water type that usually spend their weekends with days on the boat or out fishing with friends.

2)  a. My old neighbor
      b. My brother
      c. My cousin (Fisherman)

3) What I found in common with all three is that their need becomes most salient when they are on the beach or on the boat. Obviously this is because this is when they see most of the trash that should not be there.Their needs are always there but become more of a problem when they are on the water or the beach and this is due to people littering and throwing trash into the oceans.

4) The first thing my interviews said they do when they see the problem is try to pick up the trash and dispose of it properly but there's just so much trash that they see that it is virtually impossible to accomplish their goal by picking up one piece of trash every time they see one. They look for beach cleanups or boats that are made solely to pickup trash and while there are some, it needs to be a universal problem so that every boat owner can have this on their vessels. Not many people look into this problem too much because they assume that the government should deal with these problems.

5) What I learned in my interviews was that it is mostly important to get the word out and make sure that people are aware of this problem. If people don't see the value of the problem then they will never make an effort to solve the problem. This is the key, once people start valuing the problem, then they are more inclined to do something about it.

6) My conclusion is that this segment is willing and ready to help but just need a little guidance as to how and when to help because they have been doing their part in helping the community but the more they are able to spread the news the better off the whole community will be as they are able to pitch in. I would describe this segment in terms of need awareness as not very well informed because many fisherman and boaters know there's trash in the water but don't think anything of it because they are just so used to seeing it.

  1. Hi Nathan,

I had a few questions while reading your post. Why does the trash bother the fishermen? Is it out of a genuine desire for the ocean to be clean or does it affect the fishing process in some way? I do think that people need to start to value the problem. Like you said in your post, they are just so used to seeing it that they don't think anything of it. How do you get people to start valuing this problem?

    Good post!
