13A- Reading Reflection No. 1
1) I read Seth Godin's "This is Marketing" and what surprised me most about this read was that Godin made it a strong point that social media is not the answer to marketing nor is it super effective and my thoughts were that in today's society, social media would be the biggest influence on society and your targets since virtually everyone has some sort of social media. What I most liked about Godin was his emphasis on getting a real connection with your customer and having stories that were true that people would empathize with rather than just advertisement spam and lies that would entice people to buy your product. What I least admired about him was that he didn't care about the money and for him that may be great because he is already a millionaire but for the most normal people reading his book, they want to learn about marketing for their product because it is their livelihood. Godin's biggest problem that he mentions was a great problem to have and that was options on what to market because they all had such good potential. He overcame this by selecting the product or brand that he could personalize best with and tell his own story to why it is so important because his theory is that people really connect and empathize which makes them more willing to buy your products if you have a deeper connection with them.
2) Competencies Godin exhibited were resilience through trial and error in finding the best ways to market to people and also his deeper analysis of what he was doing. He was able to pause and think about how to fix his problem, what he was doing wrong, and his options to try and fix what happened in order to capitalize on his product and his marketing.
3) One part of the reading that confused me was his explanation of brand marketing and direct marketing. I don't see much of a difference between the two even after he explained and I believe that each one will produce a similar outcome.
4) Question 1: What if you can market well but can't design or come up with a brand or product?
Question 2: What is your best advice to someone who is beginning to market and develop products?
I'd ask these questions simply because I would want to learn how to get a head start and possibly not have to go through trial and error if I knew the answers to these questions.
5) I think the entrepreneur's opinion of hard work that it was necessary to get the information you needed to make your marketing succeed and after that it should be easy and I agree with that, once you get the process of something and it is successful, you should be able to replicate it.
Hey Nathan,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post. I think you touched on some really great points in your questions. I think that some people have unique strengths or a unique combination of strengths that others dont have. Thus, some one may be good at marketing and another person may be good at product development. I still think that marketing plays a key role in being an entrepreneur so dont give up!
